New York Central Track Pans at Rome, 1940s

New York Central track pans at Rome, N.Y., 1940s, looking east. Track 2 (foreground) and Track 1 (at left). Scoops were mounted on bottom of tenders of steam locomotives to scoop water on the fly. This eliminated the necessity to stop and take on water. Pans were heated in winter to prevent freezing.
