New York Central Depot at Crockett's

Crockett’s was a station about 12 miles west of Oswego on the old “Hojack” line of the New York Central. Crockett’s was an early farming community in the town of Sterling, Cayuga county. It originally was called Sterling Valley station when the Lake Ontario Shore Railroad was built from Oswego westward in the early 1870s. It was later renamed “Crocketts”  in honor of Hugh Crockett, an early settler and merchant, who came here from Baltimore, Maryland in 1834. A post office existed here between 1898 and 1915. In 1929 A. J. Hendricks was listed as freight and passenger agent.  Passenger service wad discontinued through here in 1931 but the station continued in operation handling freight until 1959 when it was closed. The last station was Floyd D. Rudd who had also previously been agent at Red Creek and Sterling stations - the latter closed in 1937. Station pictured was built ca. 1905-10, replacing an earlier structure.
